Ghanaians have been warned against the excessive intake of the so-called energy drinks which have flooded the market since it could be the source of psychiatric problems in the future.
The proliferation of these caffeine induced beverages labeled as energy drinks on the market has become a source of concern for the Parliament of Ghana.
Members of Parliament on Thursday, urged the public, especially adolescents to refrain from the excessive consumption of energy drinks with the erroneous belief that it will enhance their sexual performance and help them overcome fatigue in their daily chores.
To draw the nation’s attention to the negative and harmful effects of these energy drinks on the health of its consumers, the MP for the Builsa South constituency, Dr. Clement Apaak made a statement on the issue on the floor of Parliament.
Some of the Medical Doctors among the Members of Parliament took their turns to enumerate the harmful effects of these energy drinks and to also educate the public about the healthy and natural way to rejuvenate the body without contaminating it.
Dr. Kweku Afriyie, MP for Sefwi-Wiawso for instance, observed that though consumers of energy drinks rely on them for mental alertness, those benefits are only temporal and that it could be a trigger for mental problems in the longterm.
According to him, the caffeine in the beverages sold out there on the open market in the country only postpones the conditions which necessitated its consumption for a while.
“Commercial drivers and other motorists who take these energy drinks in order to stay awake for long journeys should take caution because the adverse implications could be serious,” he indicated.
Another Medical Doctor and MP for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa, Dr Sebastian Ngmenenso Sandaare on his part, cautioned the youth to stay away from the use of energy drinks as sexual enhancement drug because it could be a catalyst for heart related diseases.
He advised the public to take water in case they feel tired or dehydrated because according to him, “the best energy drink in the world is cool, fresh ordinary water.”
