It is increasingly becoming worrisome that some people in Ghana are becoming bolder in the persecution of journalists in their line of duty and intolerant of their rights to work in freedom.
It has come to our attention that a journalist working with the Kumasi based Metro FM, in the Ashanti Region, has been receiving death threatening messages from some unknown persons after assisting in an investigation to unravel an issue of fraud a Ghanaian resident in the UK.
The Journalist who is known as Nana Kwaku Bofa, told Africa News Radio that he does not feel safe at all because of the death threats he has been receiving from some faceless people who hide behind Whatsapp messages and anonymous phone calls from multiple unknown numbers.
“I don’t feel safe at all. I have been receiving all kinds of messages threatening to harm all the time. Due to this, I am unable to sleep at one particular place or to move freely at social gathering places as I used to. They sometimes send messages to me indicating that they know my house and they will come for me among others.” He said.
He has since made a complaint to the Amasaman Police and he is appealing to the Police Command to expedite action on investigations on the matter in order to find those who are behind these death threats.
According to Nana Kwaku Bofa, he was contacted by this lady friend Cynthia, who resides in the UK to assist her to ascertain the veracity of a purported missing amount of money from the account of her friend Ellen Abankwa, whom she had tasked to do a project on her behalf in Accra.
Ellen had complained to Cynthia that the amount of money totaling about 95,000 Cedis which was wired into her account was missing and she was worried as to what to do. Being suspicious of the claims by Ellen, Cynthia contracted Nana Kwaku Bofa to do an investigation into the matter.
His investigations revealed that the money was not missing. The paper trail indicated that Ellen had gone to withdraw the money from the account but feigned ignorance and played the victim.
Nana Bofa further narrated that since that incident he has not had his piece of mind. He suspects this issue is at the source of the death threats he has been receiving because the relationship between Cynthia and Ellen has gone frosty and since the revelation.
He also said some of the messages gave a hint about him coming in-between two great friends hence his strong suspicion that the threats he has been receiving are related to this issue.
The Office of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice have promised to get to the bottom of the matter.
Commenting on the issue, Ghana’s Deputy Attorney-General, Joseph Kpenka Dindiok indicated that the Ministry of Justice was there to ensure justice for all persons including journalists lawfully discharging their duties to the state.
There have been escalated cases of attacks and persecutions on journalists in the last few years in the West African country which is well recognized for its thriving media freedom. The latest of its low points was the gunning down of an investigative journalist, Ahmed Suale, in the full glare of the public.
Ahmed worked with Ghana’s Ace Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who have together unraveled a lot of malfeasance in the society including his latest work (Number 12), which brought down the reign of Kwesi Nyantekyi as the President of the Ghana Football Association.
