{"id":383,"date":"2021-03-03T18:15:59","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T18:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africanewsradio.com\/?p=383"},"modified":"2021-03-03T18:20:19","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T18:20:19","slug":"speaker-bagbin-advocates-more-covid-19-vaccines-for-mps-and-family-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africanewsradio.com\/index.php\/speaker-bagbin-advocates-more-covid-19-vaccines-for-mps-and-family-members\/","title":{"rendered":"2000 COVID Vaccines not Enough for Parliament &#8211; Speaker Bagbin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Parliament of Ghana has been allocated 2,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for the protection of the Members of the Legislature, staff and ancillary workers against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic which has engulfed the whole world, including Ghana.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, is not satisfied with the amount allocated to the Legislative arm and is demanding for more.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows Ghana\u2019s receipt of 600 000 doses of the AstraZeneca \/ Oxford vaccine, from the Serum Institute of India (SII) from Pune, India to Accra. Ghana became the first country outside India to receive the COVID-19 vaccine doses in the morning of 24 February, 2021.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to officials, the vaccines arrival in Accra is the first batch shipped and delivered in Africa by the COVAX Facility as part of an unprecedented effort to deliver at least 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, informed the House on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, about a communication from the Klolley Klottey Municipal Health Directorate about the National Segmented COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter sent to Parliament to that effect and signed by the Municipal Health Director, Mrs. Jenifer Andoh, read in part that, \u201cThe aim of the vaccination exercise is to help curb the erratic transmission of infection and also reduce morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. In view of the above, 2000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has been allocated to Members of Parliament and staff of Parliament.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Speaker indicated that the 2,000 doses allocated to the Legislative arm would not be enough. He said, his outfit would need not less than 6,000 doses of the vaccine.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to indicate that, the 2,000 doses would not be sufficient for the Legislature. We will need not less than 6,000 doses. The Legislature goes beyond Members of Parliament, 275; the staff of Parliament, 574; the support services and auxiliary staff; including by law, four members and children of the Members of Parliament.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is by law. That is the responsibilities of the Legislature on the health situation of the Members and their family including their spouses. And so, we need not less than 6,000 doses.
