Accra, Ghana – ParliamentNews360 | The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has intensified pressure on the John Dramani Mahama government to immediately address the ongoing power crisis, which they say is crippling the country’s economy and exposing Ghanaians to avoidable hardship.
At a press conference held in Accra under the theme “Stop the Talking, Fix the Lights – Before the 24-Hour Economy Becomes a 24-Hour Blackout,” the Minority Caucus described the current power outages as “a national emergency” and condemned what they called the government’s persistent “lack of honesty, poor planning, and administrative failure” in the energy sector.
The legislators lamented the toll the erratic power supply is taking on households, businesses, and public institutions. They cautioned that the government’s much-publicized 24-hour economy policy risks becoming meaningless if the country cannot guarantee consistent power supply.
“The time for excuses is over,” Hon. George Kwame Aboagye, Ranking Member on Energy Committee & MP for Asene-Akroso-Manso said. “The government must come clean on the true state of Ghana’s energy sector and publish a load-shedding timetable if it cannot resolve the crisis immediately.”
The Minority also questioned the silence and inaction of key institutions, including the Energy Ministry and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), urging Parliament to play a stronger oversight role in holding these bodies accountable.
They further called on President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Energy and Green Transition to take full responsibility for the deteriorating situation and present a clear road map to end the blackouts.
“This is not just about politics; it is about lives, livelihoods, and the credibility of governance,” the Minority concluded.
As Parliament continues to exercise its oversight mandate, the Minority’s call adds to growing public outcry over the power situation, with many Ghanaians demanding clarity, consistency, and competence in energy management.
