The Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport has pledged its unwavering support to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) as the Authority confronts pressing operational challenges, notably the encroachment on aviation lands.
The assurance was given during a familiarization visit by the Committee to the GCAA on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The visit formed part of the Committee’s oversight responsibilities over agencies under the Ministry of Transport.
Chairperson of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Wassa East, Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, described the engagement as “very satisfying” and underscored the urgency of protecting aviation assets, particularly those situated within internationally regulated zones.
“This is an international organization certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and their work involves regulated, restricted areas. It is vital that GCAA steps up to protect these zones,” he stated.
Hon. Adjei Mensah emphasized the importance of securing GCAA properties as a matter of national security and operational efficiency. He assured the Authority of Parliament’s backing and urged proactive steps to curb the rising threat of land encroachment.
The Committee Chair also acknowledged that some issues discussed were classified due to national security considerations but commended the GCAA for its performance and strategic direction.
Acting Director-General of the GCAA, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, welcomed the visit, describing it as both timely and encouraging. He highlighted Parliament’s critical role in supporting the Authority’s modernization goals.
“The task is quite enormous, but we believe that with your kind support, we will make the vision of a modernized aviation sector a reality,” he said.
As part of the visit, the Committee toured key operational facilities at Kotoka International Airport, including the Watch Tower, Server Room, Air Traffic Control Centre, and the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA).
Other MPs on the visit included Hon. Chiwitey Dari Andrew (Vice Chairperson, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba), Hon. Osei Nyarko Kennedy (Ranking Member, Akim Swedru), Hon. Ziedeng Anwataazumo Bede (Lawra), Hon. Frimpong Kwame Ohene (Asante Akim North), Hon. Mahama Toure Naser (Ayawaso East), Hon. Mubarak Seid (Sunyani East), and Hon. Jean-Marie Formadi (Biakoye).
